Can Facebook’s Portal Smart Display Speaker Compete With Google And Amazon?
Facebook recently launched Portal, a smart speaker with a display. It is designed to make video calls more realistic. It is powered with an AI camera and zooms automatically to keep the callers within the frame. This comes in the heels of Facebook’s most recent security breach. This is also the company’s first venture into the hardware arena after the Oculus VR Headset.
The Facebook Portal shares many features with Amazon’s Echo Show. It contains a microphone and a camera, which has set many to think about their privacy. Facebook stated that Portal was designed keeping in mind the privacy and security of the users and the microphone and the camera can be switched off with just a tap. The camera also comes with a lens cover. Portal does not view or listen to the video calls.
Portal only sends voice commands to Facebook servers after a user says: ‘Hey Portal’, just like the Amazon Echo and Google Home. People can delete their Portal voice history in their Facebook Activity Log at any time.
