Can HomePod Mini Find Success Where Apple’s HomePod Came Up Short?
Apple recently announced that they will be drawing curtains over the full-sized version of its HomePod smart speaker. This means if you own a HomePod, you will no longer receive any updates from Apple for the device. Though the HomePod did not perform well in the market, its smaller version is supposedly living up to the expectations. There are many reasons why the HomePod failed which include late entry and high pricing among others. Another reason for retiring the HomePod could indicate that Apple is working on a newer version of the product already. It is expected to have similar capabilities to the HomePod mini which includes the support for the latest protocol, Thread. It also has an ultra wideband chip.
The Thread radio in the mini points to something that was supposed to be a marquee feature of the original HomePod: the ability to act as a smart home hub.
Though the original HomePod could act as a HomeKit hub, mediating interactions with other smart home tech, it only supported accessories that used Wi-Fi or Bluetooth — third-party devices that rely on other wireless technologies, such as Thread or Zigbee, generally requires an additional hub that connects to your network.
