Can Microsoft’s Cortana Compete With Amazon And Google To Voice-Control Your Smart Home?
With the increase in the manufacturers of IoT devices, there also needs to be a good communication and relationship between devices of different manufacturers. One answer to this issue is the apps on your smartphone. However, for that, you will need to have your phone on you at all times even when your hands are full. Voice recognition comes in handy here. Windows Phone’s Cortana was one of the earliest players in this market. It now is behind Google Home and Amazon’s Alexa as the number of supported services is very small compared to Alexa.
Cortana-powered Harman Kardon Invoke speaker is available only in the US which is no surprise that it is not widely adopted.
Microsoft recently announced Cortana support for a service that offers to build your own IoT controls, using Cortana as an input trigger for If This Then That (IFTTT). Adding Cortana to your IFTTT account is simple enough.
As of now, Cortana’s integration works only one-way where Cortana is used as a voice trigger to the applets. There is plenty of scope with IFTTT and if Cortana starts to offers support for more, it could be the next big thing.
