Did Apple Leave The Smart Home Wi-Fi Market At The Wrong Time?
Apple stopped their AirPort sale in 2018, which was the wrong timing to do this as the market is just picking up. With the adoption of smart home devices rising, more and more people are looking for high-end routers that can support the load and are user-friendly. Apple’s AirPort fulfilled all the requirements but was so early in the market that nobody understood its value.
Solutions like Eero, Google WiFi, and AmpliFi have shown that people will invest in their home Wi-Fi. Even solutions from ISPs like Comcast have gotten into the business of upgrading your home Wi-Fi.
Apple could enter the home Wi-Fi market with iCloud VPN, HomeKit Gateway, or Siri and HomePod. They could sell a mesh router system designed for HomeKit and Apple’s products with the Apple TV and HomePod acting as access points.
If Apple manages to implement VPN access of public Wi-Fi, it would make Apple go over the top! Connecting the VPN to our home internet will offer the users extra safety. Siri could find new ways to communicate with Wi-Fi networks. Apple’s brand name and the loyal followers commit to the company and want to have every product by Apple which should be enough motivation for them.
