Does Apple’s Showing At WWDC 2018 Make Them A Contender In The Smart Home Race?
Apple’s smart-home platform, HomeKit, made a brief appearance at WWDC 2018. Here are some of the updates.
Shortcuts is a new app coming with iOS 12 that lets you create custom phrases to trigger a specific action using Siri. This feature is supposed to work on iOS devices, Apple Watch (via WatchOS 5) and the HomePod smart speaker.
As of now, it is not very clear how this feature is different from Siri voice integrations with the various smart home gadgets, the obvious being that you can create custom commands rather than having to use the default ones.
Mojave was introduced which is the next MacOS version. Thanks to this update, Apple will now add support on Macs for the Home apps. Before this, HomeKit access was restricted to the iPad, the iPhone, and the iPod Touch. Now, the users should be able to control their smart devices with their Mac.
Apple has also talked about integrating Apple TV with Crestron, Control4, and Savant, which are home security and automation companies. The customers will be able to use Siri for voice commands to control their smart home devices and Apple TV. Apple TV works with Nest and Canary for providing security camera live feeds.
