Facebook’s Portal Is More Than Just A Video Chat Smart Display
Facebook recently came up with a new way of video chatting. The device called Portal lets the users video chat with their Facebook friends, whether they own Portal or not. The front camera is 12-megapixel, has a 140-degree field of view, and a big HD screen so that the video is clear enough. The AI software involved makes the video look better and the audio sound better. It is offered in two sized.
Portal can also pull videos for you from Facebook Watch and play music from Pandora or Spotify. Portal can also be used to control your smart house with Alexa. The trigger phrase here is “Hey, Portal!” Every Portal device has a plastic clip that can be put over the camera to ensure privacy. The Smart Camera is designed to recognize a human in the frame, and automatically zoom in correctly and smoothly.
If you move about, the camera will follow you, positioned perfectly. If someone else joins you, Portal will re-zoom and capture everyone in the frame. So far, Portal is the most advanced video chat facility we have.
I’d also argue that every single one of these devices should come with physical buttons to disable the cameras and microphones. Both Portals do.
