Google Home And Away Routines: Set Up Routines To Enjoy A Smart Home
Google rolled out a new feature towards the end of 2020 called the Home and Away Routines. This feature essentially enables the users to automatically adjust the devices based on whether you or your family members are at home or not. This sounds like an extension of the pre-existing Routines which one could configure on the Google Home app. Home and Away Routines work best with Google’s own product – Nest. It also can control devices from other companies too, like smart lights and plugs.
To work out whether you and your family are home or away, Google uses a system called presence sensing.
These sensors are available in most Nest products like Nest Secure Tag, Nest Guard, Nest Protect, and Nest x Yale smart lock. Nest Thermostat is one of the best examples. Presence sensing also works with the proximity sensor of a Nest Thermostat, which is normally used to show the temperature when it detects someone is nearby. In this application, the sensor can help inform Google Home about whether anyone is in or not. The Google Home app also uses the GPS, cell and Wi-Fi signals of your smartphone to work out your approximate location and whether you are at home or not. To get started, open your Google Home app and click on the blue banner of Home and Away Routines. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup. A couple of good examples include switching off all the lights when everyone is away and setting up a smart plug with a heater to ensure that the heater is turned on when anyone arrives.
