Is Apple’s HomePod Barely In The Smart Speaker Game?
Consumer Intelligence Research Partners or CIRP discovered that Apple’s HomePod is hardly in the race when compared to Amazon Echo and Google Home. While there are 46.2 million Amazon Echo devices and 15.8 million Google Home smart speakers, there are less than 4 million Apple HomePods.
Selling price is one of the major concerns with HomePod. The second generation Amazon Echo Dots is priced at $20 and the third-gen Dot and Google Home Mini at $30 each. Ina stark contrast, the Apple HomePod is sold at $350. The price gap is shocking. It is likely the Apple product won’t gain popularity until it starts offering a model closer to price with Echo Dot or Home Mini.
A smart speaker’s value can be ascertained with the value it provides to its users by way of alerting, notifying, entertaining, and offering the ability to control other smart gadgets in the house. When a smart speaker works as the home hub, the incentive is more for the third-parties to come up with devices that work seamlessly with the platform.
Apple’s decision to bring the Apple Music subscription service to the Amazon Echo platform last fall may be a sign that the Cupertino, California company sees where there’s money to be made, even on a competing platform.
