Is Apple’s “Project Titan” A Smart Seat Belt To Control Your Car’s Entertainment Or Even Self-Driving System?
Current music systems in a car require everyone to listen to the same music and to ask the person sitting near the system to make changes. A self-driving car system could also have controls that may not be within the driver’s reach.
Apple’s patent for an “augmented safety restraint” talks about adding more fixtures to a seat belt. Apple is of the opinion that by adding sensors, speakers, microphones and the like to seat belt facing outwards, passengers would be able to better communicate with each other.
Speakers fixed in the strap could offer a customized audio experience for every passenger. Microphones can offer better communication between passengers who are not sitting near each other.
Apple suggests a touch-based interaction system. Haptic feedback could be in the form of vibrations sent via the strap that could notify the user of messages or warn the driver about issues.
The inclusion of gestures could allow for the seat belt to control a navigation system in a vehicle and its climate control system, among other elements.
This kind of alternative control system would be great in a self-driving vehicle. It is rumored that Apple is working on developing its own self-driving car.
