Lack Of Innovation In Smart TVs Help Amazon Fire TV And Roku Devices Lead The Way In Smart Device Growth
In the second quarter of this years, the global market for smart devices grew by 38.5% which included 130.1 million devices. International Data Corporation stated that digital media adapters, like Amazon’s Fire TV and Roku devices, were responsible for the biggest share of the market. Adapters took advantage of the lack of software updates on smart TVs and hence, the boom.
Digital media adapters are an important gateway into content ecosystems as well as broader consumer IoT ecosystems in general – such as smart assistants and related services – and their low price point is drawing interest from a growing base of consumers worldwide.
Amazon’s Fire TV led the market as over 5 million units were shipped in the last quarter. IDC stated that Amazon managed to get hold of a great share in other countries like the UK, Japan, and India. This was followed by Google’s Chromecast with 3.7 million shipped devices. Roku, whose presence outside of the US is debatable, came third.
