Literally Out Of This World! Zigbee Smart Tech Used In Mars Rover For Better Communication.
It has recently been revealed that the technology used in the Philips Hue lightbulb – the Zigbee radios, is being used to communicate Ingenuity drone copter twirling about on Mars with the Perseverance rover. Zigbee is the ideal wireless protocol to transfer telemetry data between NASA’s Perseverance rover and the semi-autonomous flying drone. This technology is essential to get the basic information across without consuming much power to extend the battery usage as much as possible. The Zigbee wireless protocol exemplified “low energy” long before Bluetooth adopted the LE specification.
The protocol is also very robust, designed to operate in a mesh of nodes that can overcome packet delivery failures without interfering with neighboring signals.
The Zigbee protocol has plenty of range and its signal can reach about 150 feet in the home, assisting better in sending information across longer distances. In case the devices are in line-of-sight, this can be stretched much farther, and presumably farther still in the extremely thin atmosphere of Mars. NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter can communicate with the Mars Helicopter Base Station on the Perseverance rover from about 2,700 feet away! Most of the smart home products now have been manufactured using Zigbee technology that helps in consuming lower power and communicating with other devices that are not within the line-of-sight and are not connected to the same network.
