Off-The-Shelf Smart Home Devices To Improve Health And Independence Of Seniors
Recent research done in collaboration with multiple universities and remote aged care providers has uncovered the fact that off-the-shelf smart home devices like robotic vacuum cleaners and smart lights are doing their part in promoting health, wellbeing, and independence amongst older people. As part of the trial, more than 23 homes were equipped with off-the-shelf smart home products from different vendors and diverse functionalities. The participating universities then collected the data on how frequently the devices were used.
The research found that the Google Home suite of devices were the most frequently used devices, followed by smart lights.
Google Home was being used as a “gateway” device to access other home devices that were connected to the network. This included smart lights and smart kettles. Many users accessed music through smart home systems as well. The aged care facilities were also provided with guidance on how they could use the smart home systems to their best capability.
