The Nest Hello Video Doorbell is a doorbell that also functions as a superb security camera. “What’s wrong with my traditional ding-dong or chiming doorbell?”, I hear you ask. Well, nothing. Design of the Nest Video Doorbell
The Nest Video Doorbell has a simple, slim, stylish design that adds a beautiful touch to your front door. Measuring 1.7 x 4.6 x 1 inches and weighing only 4.55 ounces, this device can fit into narrow or tight spaces around your door or door frame. It is available only in black color with a blue halo glow around the push button.
It features a ⅓ inch, 3-megapixel (2K) color sensor camera with 8x digital zoom and an impressive 160° diagonal field of view. It delivers 1600 x 1200 HD UXGA video at up to 30 frames per second, with HDR and H.264 encoding. Its 850 nm infrared LEDs allows it to give you clear and distinct pictures and videos even in the night and its sensors respond to ambient light.
At the bottom of the device are the speaker and microphone. Both give good quality audio that ensures you and your visitors can hear each other well.
To install the Nest Hello Video Doorbell, you need a wired doorbell, a chime, a 10VA transformer, and a trained technician (at an additional cost) to carry out the installation. At your request, Nest Company can recommend the nearest Nest Pros to your location. If you do not have an existing wired connection, one would have to be provided to power the Nest Hello. Also, if your existing doorbell does not have a chime with the right transformer, you will need to buy and install one.
You need a robust and reliable Wi-Fi connection to use the Nest Hello. The device supports Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), 802.11a/b/g//n/ac Wi-Fi protocols, and 2.4GHx and 5GHz 2×2 MIMO Wi-Fi bandwidths. Security encryption protocols supported by the device include WEP, WPA, and WPA2. It also supports 128-bit encryption and two-step verification. At least broadband internet connection of at least 2 Mbps upload speed is advised for seamless streaming of videos and uploading video history to the cloud.

Installation: A service technician is required to install the Nest Hello. Installation takes just about an hour or less to complete depending on whether the pre-requisites are available or are to be newly provided. Once installed, you do not have to carry out any maintenance on Nest Hello or its associated equipment. You can place the blue Nest shield sticker which comes in the box on your door or close-by window to warn and ward off would-be intruders.
Nest App Control: You need to download the Nest app from the Apple App Store or Android Play Store to your phone device to set up the Nest Hello the first time and for continuous use. Setting up is easy and only takes a few minutes. If this is your first Nest device, then you will need to create a Nest account in the app. Otherwise, add the Nest Hello to your list of devices in your Nest account in the app. The app gives you simple, step-by-step instructions, which, once followed, sets up the equipment for your use. Once configured and running, you can set and control all features of the Nest Hello through the app.
Camera and Video Features: A steady and reliable Wi-Fi connection of at least 2 Mbps is required to enjoy continuous video recording and streaming features of the Nest Hello. You can control the quality of the video from the app. The app gives you three choices of video resolution quality: low, medium, and high. Choose the low setting if your internet speed is weak in the area your phone is and set it back to medium or high when you are in an area with faster internet speed. At night, the camera gives you a clear view of your frontage, including vehicles, moving objects, or people.
Familiar Face Function: Subscribing to Nest Aware allows you to enjoy a unique face recognition feature that identifies and recognizes family members and known individuals each time they approach your door. You can assign a name to a face the first time the device detects a person. Nest Hello can discern known persons, unknown faces, and moving objects and send you notifications accordingly. When a family member or known friend visits, it sends you a special notice when they arrive and leave your house.
This familiar face recognition functions intelligently improves over time as family, friends, relatives, and visitors come and go from your home. The more a person visits, the more snapshots are stored in the device’s library, making it easier for it to recognize and identify faces.
Quality HD Audio: The devices use HD Talk and Listen, which eliminates noise and echo, enabling you to hear your visitors loud and clear.
Sometimes you may not be at home, or you do not want to be disturbed. With the Nest Hello, you can set pre-recorded quick response message in your voice and have them played back automatically or at your choosing from the app.
Notifications and Alerts: Nest Hello can detect people, motion, and sound around your frontage and notify you even if the person does not ring your doorbell. It can discern the difference between a person and a thing. If you subscribe to Nest Aware, you can enjoy the added benefit of recognizing familiar faces or total strangers.
The device keeps the last 3-hours’ history, from which you can review events around your home. If you want a more extended historical period, then you will have to subscribe to Nest Aware.
