The Nest Protect Alarm is built to detect smoke, type of smoke, and carbon monoxide emission within your home. The device houses a heat sensor that operates within ±1.8°F, a humidity sensor that functions within ±3%RH, an ambient light sensor, and an occupancy sensor with 120° field of view at a depth of 20 feet.
The device has a 10-year electrochemical CO sensor that can detect the presence of CO with your home. It also has a Steam Sensor that can distinguish steam from smoke or fire.
The split-spectrum sensor allows it to distinguish between fast and slow burning fires using two wavelengths of light. The device is designed to periodically tests itself in various aspect to ensure that it is always in good working condition.
The omnidirectional microphone enables the Nest Protect to relate warnings and messages using a normal, human voice. When a device detects a situation, all the Nest Protect devices in your house speaks and describes the notice. So, if smoke is detected the children’s bedroom, all Nest Protect devices will speak, alerting you and informing you where the detection is.

Carbon monoxide is a poisonous, colorless, and odorless gas that can lead to death. Nest Protect has a revolutionary CO detector that not only detects the gas but also tells you where it is. When an emergency occurs, and if both are connected, Nest Protect instructs your Nest Thermostat to turn off the heating system.
Notifications and Alerts: Nest Protect gives you two kinds of alerts, heads-up alerts, and emergency alarms. When smoke and carbon monoxide is detected, all Nest Protect devices in home speaks regardless of where the smoke or gas is detected. The same applies when there is an emergency.
Mute/Silence alarm from your Phone: Nest Protect is the first smoke/fire detector system that you can turn off its alarm from your phone without the use of additional hardware. Walk to the device that detected the problem, open the Nest app, and silence the alarm. All categories or alerts and warnings can be silenced except for emergency alarm when the smoke level is too high. This requirement is an industry-specification that applies to all smoke alarms.
Safety Check: Nest Protect automatically carries out a test on its batteries and sensors at about 400 times a day, so you would not be woken up in the night with a low-battery warning alert. At night, when all devices have tested themselves, Nest Protect display a quick green glow to let you know the batteries are good and okay. You can also manually check all your devices with a single tap on your phone or schedule monthly tests. At the end of the exercise, the app gives you a full result of the analysis.
Family Accounts: All members of your family do not have to use one account and share passwords. Each can have an individual, free Nest account, and password. Each can receive alerts on their phone, hush, or test the alarm.
Sound Check: Nest Protect is the 1st alarm system that can quietly test its speaker and horn. It carries out this test by making a short sound and then listens through its microphone to confirm it is okay. You receive a notification 5 minutes before a scheduled inspection, and you may skip the test and postpone it till next month, or you may proceed with it. You may also, if you so choose, altogether disable Sound Checkup in the app. If you are still at home while Sound Check is about to run, the Home/Away Assist feature delays the check until you are out of the house.
Pathlight: At night, Nest Protect provides you with a lighted path through your home. As you walk underneath each device, it gives you a bright light to guide your way.
