Smart Shelves, Cameras, And Cashier-less Checkouts Are Just Some Ways The IoT Will Shape The World Of Retail
JD.com and Intel have set up a research lab to identify ways the Internet of Things (IoT) can be used to develop next-generation retail applications, including vending machines and modernized retail stores.
The existing partnership between them was for Intel’s Internet of Things architecture coming together with JD.com’s visual algorithm to analyze and identify patterns of in-store foot traffic and purchases. These analytics have been implemented in unmanned D-Mart stores selling smart cameras, cashier-less checkout counters, digital signages, shelves, sensors, and more.
This new lab aims to create other applications like media and advertising services, vending machines, and more. The company is planning to make the experience of online shopping available with brick and mortar outlets as well. It is also focused on offering a personalized experience.
Intel has plans of partnering with the Alibaba Group. Intel’s software, artificial intelligence, and hardware will now work with Alibaba Cloud’s IoT range. The AI will work to interpret data so collected to come up with business insights. The Apsara Stack alliance is working with the goal of creating an ecosystem of hybrid cloud offerings for the Alibaba cloud service stack.
