Smart Voice Assistants Showing Progress But A Long Way To Go To Being Truly “Smart”
Amazon recently announced its new range of hardware designed with Alexa. The company also launched new Alexa capabilities, such as a better memory. Alexa’s whisper feature has taken the world by surprise. It is considerate as well as quite creepy! Google has also been achieving new things with its devices. The Google Assistant does not need the wake word for continuing conversations. There is much progress to be made as these virtual assistants hear the users correctly only about 50% of the time.
Alexa had to be trained on recordings of human interactions with voice-controlled, far-field microphones in both whisper and normal phonation modes.
With hunches, Alexa can understand the tone and whisper back, just as a friend might do. It will also suggest things that you should do, such as locking the door. With Google’s Duplex, the Assistant can now hold realistic telephone conversations with businesses. Microsoft’s Cortana also took great strides this year and it is now more conversational than ever. Most of Siri’s recent upgrades were based on Shortcuts, which work similar to Routines. Voice recognition has improved beyond recognition over time and it does not look like it is going to slow down anytime soon. While virtual assistant still has not become as graceful as human interaction, they are clearly on their way to achieving it.
