State of IoT Security Report Reveals Your Smart Devices Aren’t So Smart When It Comes To Privacy And Security
Research tells us that smart devices are not very smart regarding privacy and security. Virginia-based Dark Cubed tested and analyzed the security for consumer IoT devices. Instead of trying to hack it, this test focused on monitoring these devices, which revealed many unexplained communications.
Retailers must consider security as a part of their buying processes and government must consider regulations that focus on consumer protections.
The report talks about the fact that most connected devices in the retail market in the US are managed by offshore entities that don’t protect user data to high-security standards. Instead of patching, the devices must be made secure from the very first day. Both the manufacturer and the platform provider should play a role in making sure that the device’s security is tight.
More often than not, the consumers are not aware of what they are connected to, what sort of information is going through them, and who has access for it. This revelation has raised awareness of the prevailing security and privacy issues. The reason why such devices make it to the market is due to the explosive growth.
Lack of standard regulation in the IoT market is one major reason for this issue. To curb the issue, distributors and retailers of IoT devices need to ensure that these devices are managed by a regulated U.S company.
