There Is A Chance Smart Home Devices May Cease Working By 2021. Why?
There is a chance that most of the smart home devices may lose connectivity in the next couple of years. This is due to the security certificate authentication that the devices are relying on. This security certificate carries an expiration date and once they expire, they need to be renewed – both on the server-side and on the client end. Most manufacturers have had their certificates issued with a 20-year expiration which is coming to an end. This has recently occurred with Roku.
Roku devices suddenly could not connect to online services and streams because their root certificates had expired.
Though Roku has already issued a patch to have this resolved, most users did not update their devices which caused the owners to then panic. One of the biggest root certificates being used worldwide is set to expire on September 30, 2021. To continue using your devices, you will need to update your devices before then. Most companies push out important upgrades and notify the users. Companies like Microsoft carry their upgrades in the background to ensure smooth running. Smart TVs can be another problem – all this needs to be considered from a holistic level and upgrades should be pushed as soon as possible with required instructions for the users.
