Throwing Shade At Their Smart Home Competition, Ikea Is Making Inexpensive Smart Window Blinds.
Ikea is popular for its reliable, low-cost furniture. However, over the last few months, the furniture giant has been venturing into a new market of smart home gadgets that are budget-friendly. Ikea is now focusing on internet-controlled smart shades that don’t cost too much.
Ikea is releasing two smart blind models – Kadrilj and Fyrtur. The former is a set of regular gray blinds while the latter are blackout shades. These have been priced quite aggressively and are lesser than half the price of the market price.
Ikea is taking a simple approach to the smart shades: instead of wiring them into your house, the shades have a removable, rechargeable battery pack. An included remote will let you raise and lower the shades.
These shades would be compatible with Tradfri smart lights and smart plugs. All these can be controlled via one app and even with HomeKit, Alexa, and Google Assistant.
Ikea is using to its advantage the fact that the company has been manufacturing curtains for decades now and many already own them. These smart blinds are designed to be compatible with Ikea’s existing Vidga series curtain rails, making the move simpler. The new product is set to release in the first week of February in Germany.
