Wemo Will No Longer Use Its Network-Based Model, Shifting Towards New Online Accounts
Wemo’s smart home products are far from perfect, with sometimes-difficult setup processes, tricky integration with third-party services, and an Android app that currently has 2/5 stars on the Play Store.
A few of these issues arise from the fact that Wemo does not have a unified account system. That issue will be resolved now. Wemo will now offer Wemo Accounts. It will pair all your smart devices to an online account that is guarded with an email and password. Before now, Wemo devices worked on the local network with PIN-based authentication. While this decreased reliance on cloud services for Wemo devices, the mobile apps always had issues with discovering devices on the local networks.
This new account system will move everything from the local network to the cloud services. Wemo devices will not need firmware updates at the moment. All the users will require version 1.25 or later of the mobile app. Belkin’s support page mentions that online accounts will become a necessity in the future. If you want to connect Wemo devices to services like IFTTT, Alexa, or Google Assistant, you will require it even today. Existing connections to third-party services will work as normal but you will soon have to create an account and reconnect them.
