Will Amazon And Google Show More Transparency When It Comes To Consumer Privacy And Shared Data?
We asked two of the most popular smart home assistants — Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant — how to find the user data their devices collected about us.
While the Google Assistant directed the user to google.com/myactivity, Alexa couldn’t answer the question at all. It’s not a very difficult question to ask the speakers present in over a million American residences.
If you go where the Assistant directs you, you will find a list of commands one has given in the past along with the option to delete it. Amazon’s Alexa, however, couldn’t respond to the question, no matter how it was worded.
An email was dropped to an Amazon spokesperson who told us we can find it under “Alexa, Echo Devices and Your Privacy”. You can view, edit, or delete by navigating to amazon.com/alexaprivacy.
On their privacy notice, it is written that the company shares this information with third-party service providers and various Amazon subsidiaries. Both Amazon and Google are doing their best to provide more transparency after the Facebook Cambridge Analytica scandal. While a stricter privacy protection law is seen in Europe, the US is still to do something on that end.
